Supporting Victoria’s sustainable energy future...
The Victorian Government is working with industry and the community to develop a secure and sustainable energy future for Victoria.
Neighbourhood batteries allow affordable energy storage that can rapidly unlock local solar capacity and ensure that Victorians continue to benefit from this renewable energy resource. Neighbourhood batteries can also improve grid reliability by providing back-up power for essential community services during grid outages.
The Neighbourhood Battery Initiative (NBI) and 100 Neighbourhood Batteries (100NB) Program have been developed to assist in the roll-out of neighbourhood batteries across Victoria.
NBI has funded feasibility studies, business cases, and neighbourhood battery installations. To date, the NBI has delivered 2 batteries within the Greater Metro Melbourne area and is set to deliver 3 more by the start of 2025.
The 100NB Program builds on the success of NBI and is a commitment to deliver 100 neighbourhood-scale batteries across Victoria via a $42.2 million, 4-year grant program. The Program aims to improve energy reliability and provide energy storage capacity for locally generated solar, which is expected to increase access to renewable energy and help lower energy bills.
Head to our website at: energy.vic.gov.au/grants/neighbourhood-batteries to find more about these and other programs that can support you and your community in your energy transition.
Partner agency, Sustainability Victoria (SV) facilitates partnerships and collaborations to accelerate the take-up of renewable energy, energy efficiency measures, and circularity in communities across Victoria.
SV works with local governments and community organisations to share knowledge and build capability. SV has brokered energy-efficient upgrades to hundreds of councils and community facilities, and have co-designed community-owned renewable energy hubs, including solar farms and central battery storage.
Find out more about how SV is accelerating Victoria’s transition to a circular, climate-resilient economy at sustainability.vic.gov.au.

Electrifying Everything ...
Rewiring Australia is a non-profit, independent, non-partisan organisation dedicated to representing the people, households and communities in the energy system. We empirically demonstrate and communicate the cost savings, emissions reductions, and energy system benefits of electrification.
We deliver practical climate progress by working with government, industry, and communities to electrify everything in four core areas:
- Education & communications: We want to make it easy for homes to understand the economic, health and environmental benefits of electrification and why they should make the switch.
- Advocacy: We engage directly with all levels of government, members of parliament, industry and regulatory bodies to advocate for reform to the energy system to support rapid decarbonisation through electrification. This includes supporting homes and businesses to electrify and shift to clean energy.
- Data driven research: We bring together data from a diverse range of areas including detailed energy flows, economic, demographic and emissions data to build the case (and narrative) for electrification.
- Deployment of electrification: We work to support electrification happening right now.
