As the audience listened, transfixed on the speakers and soaking up the stories, Alan and Diana sat at a table at the back. With laptops and tablets, pen and paper, they graphically recorded the narrative threads and ideas that so commanded the audience’s attention. At the end of each session they chatted and refined their snapshots before sending them to us. A truly amazing process to watch and a special record of the day’s atmosphere!
1A Renewable Energy Communities
Community energy icons told their stories of community transformation. Anne Kennedy from Zero Emissions Noosa, Geoff Park from Renewable Newstead, and Daniel Redman from RePower Shoalhaven told of inspiring community projects and their key learnings. Absent due to illness was Matthew Charles-Jones from TRY.
1B Australia’s Energy Future
Four different visions looked at where Australia is going, what do we need to do, and how to ensure success. Presented by Saul Griffiths, Chief Scientist and Founder of Rewiring Australia, Lauren Mellor from Original Power with Scott McDinny of the Ngardera Cooperative in the Northern Territory, Brendan French, CEO of Energy Consumers Australia, and Dr Sophie Scamps MP, the Federal Member for Mackellar. Each one presented their own unique insight on the direction we are heading.
1C Creating the Community Renewable Vision
“How can we all support households, businesses and organisations to transition to renewable energy in ways that are fast, fair and vital?” In this facilitated workshop participants shared their knowledge of what worked in driving change in their communities and the best support for households and communities to do so.
1D Finance & Partnerships
This session focused on the sources of finance and support that successful community energy projects have leveraged. Jonathan Prendergast, Director at Komo Energy, Christina Kirsch, Cofounder of Clearsky Solar Investments, and Briony O’Shea, Chair of the Citizens Own Renewable Energy Network Australia (CORENA), detailed some of the resources that speed the energy transition within communities.
